Testing Materials for PFOA Filtration
Compared six filtration materials in a team research project using infrared spectroscopy and HPLC to investigate PFOA removal from water.
Methods & findings +
Tested coffee grounds, biochar, coconut, sawdust, rayon, and cut-up plastic bottles against filter paper. Coffee grounds and biochar showed the most promise; no material achieved complete removal in a single pass.
Our poster reports partial removal, without an established removal percentage. The work was presented through Lyons Township High School’s 2024 Exemplary Student Research Program with Argonne.
